Why your hair thins in Dubai (and it is not the climate)
Every dermatology clinic in Dubai hears the same story by month three of an expat's first year: "My hair is falling out, what is wrong with me?" The blame usually lands on the weather, a new diet, or imagined stress. The actual cause is something most people never consider — the water they are washing their hair in.
The chemistry, briefly
Chlorine oxidises keratin — the structural protein in your hair. In the concentrations DEWA maintains (0.3–0.8 mg/L residual) it is perfectly safe to drink, but when you are standing under a hot shower for ten minutes, you are absorbing and inhaling that chlorine over your entire scalp. Repeated daily, it strips the hair cuticle, weakens follicle attachment, and shifts the colour of dyed hair.
Chloramine (chlorine + ammonia), which DEWA also uses as a secondary disinfectant, is more stable and more damaging — it survives your shower stream and penetrates hair shafts. The American Academy of Dermatology links prolonged chloramine exposure to a measurable increase in telogen effluvium (the shedding phase of hair growth).
Why it is worse in Dubai specifically
Two things stack. First, Dubai tap water sits in rooftop tanks at 40–50°C during summer — that heat reduces chlorine but massively increases bacterial loads, so DEWA adds more chlorine at source to compensate. Second, hot showers open pore and follicle openings, so absorption rates are higher. A 10-minute Dubai shower delivers more chlorine to your scalp than a week of drinking the same water.
What actually works
Shampoos and conditioners marketed for "chlorine damage" are treating the symptom. The only real fix is removing chlorine before it touches your head.
