Why your kettle scales so fast in Dubai (and what fixes it)
You descaled the kettle last Sunday. By this weekend there's a white ring along the waterline again. The coffee machine drip tray has chalky deposits. The steam iron leaks white water. This is Dubai water hardness in daily life.
Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, measured as mg/L CaCO₃. Anything over 180 mg/L is "very hard." Dubai tap water typically runs 160–320 mg/L — essentially guaranteed to scale small appliances.
What scale does beyond looking ugly
A kettle with a 5 mm scale coating on the heating element consumes 30% more electricity to boil the same litre. A descaled coffee machine extracts 18–24% less soluble solids — your coffee literally tastes weaker. An iron with internal scale spits mineral flakes onto dark fabric.
Long-term, scale reduces appliance life by 40–60%. A AED 800 kettle lasts 18 months in Dubai tap water; the same model lasts 4 years on filtered.
The fix
Use RO-filtered water (output hardness under 5 mg/L) in everything that boils, steams, or brews. Kettle, coffee machine, iron, instant-pot, ice maker. Scale stops accumulating within a week.
For whole-home hardness (shower, dishwasher, washing machine), you need a water softener — a different product from an RO filter. Most Dubai families start with RO + shower filter (covers drinking + skin/hair) and add whole-house softening later if dishwasher or tile scaling becomes a problem.
